"How many bits per picture element does a display need?" For the display resolutions now commonly in use, only 4 bits per picture element (pel) are needed for the display of monochrome images. A total of 8 bits per pel are needed for color images. These conclusions are based both on experiment and on the theoretical model of the visual system in which the detectors in the eye are treated as sim...
متن کاملDisplay Requirements for an Interactive Rail Scheduling Display
This work, a collaboration between Alstom Transport and the MIT Humans and Automation Laboratory (HAL), is focused on the development of an interactive in-cab scheduling interface for train operators. Currently, operators rely on a combination of paper schedules, paper speed charts, and rote memorization to meet the many demands of train operation. The separation of this information over multip...
متن کاملEnhanced Interactive Spiral Display
Spiral displays have been developed to visualize the cyclic character of a data set. They are particularly useful for spotting seasonal patterns in time series data. This, however, requires expressive visual encoding and efficient interaction. In this paper, we improve existing spiral displays by applying the expressive two-tone pseudo coloring. This allows users to read off data values more pr...

15 صفحه اولEfficient Settlement Selection for Interactive Display
Three new models for the settlement selection problem are discussed and compared with the existing models. The new models determine a ranking rather than a selection, which has advantages both from the e ciency and the geographic correctness point of view. We give gures of selections based on six di erent models, and explain how the models can be implemented e ciently.
